With small children (up to about 8) Sukošan wins: a sandy, shallow seabed at Dječji raj beach, apartments with parking in the yard and Zadar 15 minutes away by car. With older kids and teenagers Biograd na Moru is the better base – a long promenade, evening entertainment, a fun park and Kornati excursion boats leaving straight from the harbour. Zadar makes sense if you want a city and day trips and the beach is your second priority.

If your child cannot swim yet, the seabed matters most. Dječji raj in Sukošan is one of the few beaches around Zadar with sand under the water and knee-deep sea for tens of metres out; there are showers, changing cabins, sunbeds and cafés right on the seafront, so a parent with a coffee can still see the kids. The downside: in July and August it is full from 10 am, and sand means sand everywhere afterwards. Biograd has longer and more varied beaches. Dražica in the centre is a Blue Flag pebble beach with a water slide, inflatables and bars – ideal for 8–14-year-olds, rather hectic for toddlers. Soline, south of the centre, shifts from pebble to sand, is shallower and backed by a pine wood with a campsite – the closest equivalent to Sukošan. Bosana to the north has a playground and volleyball.

In Sukošan an evening means a walk along the seafront, an ice cream and silence by eleven. For families with small children that is a plus; for twelve-year-olds it is dull. Biograd has a long promenade with rides, stalls and music, a permanent fun park on the edge of town and summer concerts; teenagers find their own way and parents can sit on the seafront. Zadar offers a city programme – the Sea Organ at sunset, festivals, museums – but the centre is crowded in the evening and pushing a buggy over the marble is no fun.
Boat trips: Kornati and Telašćica excursions leave Biograd in the morning (a full day with lunch typically costs €40–60 per adult in 2026, children less); Zadar has a similar range plus ferries to Ugljan, Dugi otok and other islands. In 2026 apartment prices in Sukošan are slightly lower than in Biograd and noticeably lower than in Zadar (see the table); the tourist tax is the same across Zadar County. The biggest practical difference is parking: in Sukošan most apartments have a space in the yard, in Biograd that holds outside the centre, and in Zadar expect paid zones and a hunt for a space after every trip.
Without a car: suburban bus 120 links Sukošan and Zadar (about 15 departures on weekdays, almost none on Sundays); from Biograd intercity buses on the Zadar–Split route pass every hour or two. Zadar airport is 8 km from Sukošan and 25 km from Biograd. Food and shops: Sukošan has 2–3 supermarkets and bakeries and fish sold on the seafront in the morning; Biograd has a market, more restaurants and a pharmacy with longer hours.
Mistakes parents make: choosing Zadar for the old-town photos and then driving to a beach every day; taking a Biograd apartment right above the promenade and finding the kids cannot sleep before midnight; or booking a first-row Sukošan apartment by the marina, where the beach is concrete and the beach club expensive.
