The best SUP spots around Zadar are the enclosed bays: Zlatna luka in Sukošan, the Kolovare–Foša stretch under Zadar's old town walls and the shallow lagoon at Nin. Paddle between 7:00 and 11:00 before the maestral wind builds, and never try to cross the Zadar Channel to Ugljan. Rentals cost 5–15 € per hour in 2026 and no licence is required.
The coast between Zadar and Sukošan is low, indented and sheltered by the islands of Ugljan and Pašman, so on most summer mornings the sea is flat calm. These four routes suit beginners as well:
For more experienced paddlers, Petrčane and Kožino north of Zadar offer a long, little-built coastline facing Ugljan. Beaches to launch from are listed in Beaches in Sukošan: Dječji raj, Makarska, Zlatna luka and nearby and Beaches in Zadar: Kolovare, Borik, Diklo and where to go with kids.
Summer on the Adriatic is ruled by the maestral, a thermal north-westerly that picks up around 11:00–13:00, peaks between 14:00 and 16:00 (typically 10–20 knots) and dies at sunset. At Sukošan it blows from Ugljan towards the mainland – safe, but a 30–50 cm chop turns the paddle home into hard work. Two winds to avoid altogether: the bura from the north-east, an offshore wind that pushes boards away from the coast (stay on land when it is forecast), and the jugo from the south-east with long swell.
| Time | Wind (typical summer day) | SUP |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00–11:00 | calm, glassy sea | ideal |
| 11:00–14:00 | maestral building, 5–12 kn | bays only |
| 14:00–17:00 | maestral peak, 10–20 kn | no |
| 18:00–dusk | dropping | good, short routes |
Check the forecast on DHMZ (meteo.hr) or Windy and look at gusts, not the average.
On the beaches of Zadar, Sukošan and Biograd a paddleboard costs 10–15 € per hour in the 2026 season, two hours 18–25 €, a full day 30–50 €. Self-service stations with an app are cheaper – suprent.eu, our own team's rental in Sukošan, unlocks boards through the app at 5 €/h with paddle and life jacket included. Multi-day rentals delivered to your apartment work out at 9–15 € per day.
The price normally covers the board (usually inflatable, 10–11 ft), paddle, leash and life jacket. A dry bag or a child's vest may cost a few euros extra. Most rentals do not ask for a deposit – an ID card is enough.
You do not need any licence or registration for a paddleboard in Croatia – like kayaks and rowing boats it counts as an unpowered craft. The maritime police can still fine you for:
Always use the ankle leash; in a bura it is the one thing that keeps you with the board. If you want something faster than a paddle, read Boat Rental Without a Licence in Croatia: What You Can Drive.
The most common: setting off at 13:00 thinking Ugljan is close. The Zadar Channel is 3–4 km of open water with ferries every half hour and an afternoon maestral – people get towed back from there. Second: inflating the board to 8 psi instead of 15 – it flexes and paddles twice as hard. Third: no water and no hat in the July sun; the reflection off the sea burns you within an hour.
To find a rental on the spot, see rentals in Sukošan or experiences in Zadar; for longer island trips there is boat rental with or without a skipper.
